In this article, we will explore the compelling reasons why regular dental services are crucial for children. Ensuring the oral health of children is vital for their overall well-being, and understanding these reasons can help caregivers and parents prioritize dental health from an early age. Proper dental care from a young age plays a critical role in preventing dental issues later in life. By adopting good oral hygiene practices, children can avoid numerous dental problems that are costly and painful. The need for children to regularly visit dental professionals cannot be overemphasized, as it lays the groundwork for lifelong oral health.

           1. Promoting Healthy Oral Hygiene Habits

Educating children about oral care early on can lay the foundation for lifelong healthy habits. Understanding how to care for their teeth and gums helps children retain their natural teeth longer and prevents future oral issues. Introducing concepts of brushing and flossing at a young age can instill a sense of responsibility regarding dental hygiene. Moreover, children who receive guidance on oral health are less likely to develop cavities or other dental ailments as they grow. This level of early education can help bridge the gap in oral health awareness, ultimately reducing the chance of oral health complications.

           2. Teaching Proper Brushing Techniques

Dentists play a fundamental role in teaching children the correct techniques for brushing and flossing. During regular dental visits, dentists can demonstrate the right way to brush teeth, ensuring full coverage and gentle care of the gums. The use of visual aids and interactive learning further cements these lessons, making them more approachable and engaging for children. These dental services can also introduce special aids like electric toothbrushes, which can enhance a child's commitment to proper dental care. As a result, children are more likely to practice effective brushing methods, leading to better oral health outcomes.

           3. Incorporating Fluoride Treatments and Their Benefits

Fluoride treatments are important preventive measures offered by dentists to enhance a child's oral health. Such treatments help strengthen the enamel, making it resilient to decay and cavities. Given that many children's diets are high in sugary foods and beverages, fluoride acts as a protective barrier against frequent acid attacks. Regular fluoride treatments can significantly reduce the occurrence of cavities, which remains a prevalent issue among children. Incorporating these treatments early on ensures that children's teeth are fortified against decay, contributing to healthier dental development.

           4. Encouraging Regular Dental Checkups

Regular dental checkups are essential in maintaining oral health and early detection of potential issues. These visits provide a platform for continuous monitoring and timely interventions that can prevent complications. Consistent dental checkups allow for professional cleaning, which is crucial as it removes built-up tartar that regular brushing cannot. Adding to the significance, early detection of dental problems can lead to simpler and less invasive treatments. Encouraging a routine of these visits builds a child's comfort with dental care, enabling a positive perception of dentistry throughout life.

           5. Addressing Parental Concerns and Misconceptions

Parents often have concerns and misconceptions regarding the necessity of dental services for their children, sometimes believing baby teeth do not require professional care. Educating parents about the importance of baby teeth in speech development and space maintenance for adult teeth can alter this perception. Additionally, addressing fears of exposure to dental procedures helps in building trust in professional dental care. By understanding the impact of early dental visits, parents are more likely to encourage their children to maintain proper oral hygiene. Consequently, clearing these misconceptions contributes positively to the child's lifelong dental health commitment.

           6. Preventing Tooth Decay and Cavities

Children's diets are often dominated by high-sugar foods, contributing significantly to tooth decay and cavities. Sugary substances interact with bacteria in the mouth, producing acids that erode tooth enamel. Frequent consumption of sugar-laden products like candies, sodas, and juices exacerbates these effects, making children more susceptible to cavities. Dental professionals recommend limiting sugar intake and providing children with healthier alternatives. Promoting water and whole foods over sugary snacks and drinks can drastically enhance a child's oral health by reducing the potential for decay.

           7. Protecting Teeth With Sealants

Dental sealants provide additional protection against cavities, particularly in the grooves and fissures of molars. Made from thin, protective coatings painted on the chewing surfaces, sealants block out food particles and plaque from these hard-to-reach areas. According to Statista, approximately 15% of children and adolescents in the United States had oral health problems in 2020, which highlights the need for preventive measures like sealants. The application of these sealants is quick, painless, and holds long-term benefits in safeguarding teeth from decay. Sealants are especially beneficial for children, significantly decreasing the incidence of cavities in permanent molars.

           8. Using Techniques for Effective Plaque Removal

Effective plaque removal is essential in preventing tooth decay and maintaining excellent oral hygiene. Children must be taught proper brushing techniques, such as using soft-bristled brushes and fluoride toothpaste. Additionally, flossing should be introduced early, as it reaches spaces that toothbrushes cannot, effectively eliminating plaque buildup between teeth. Instruction on these techniques should be reinforced during regular dental visits, allowing professionals to offer corrective guidance. By mastering these methods, children can significantly reduce their risk of developing cavities and ensure overall oral health.

           9. Monitoring and Evaluating the Need for Fillings

Regular dental examinations help in monitoring the progression of decay and determining the necessity of fillings. Early identification of carious lesions can lead to less invasive treatments like dental fillings, which restore the tooth's integrity. Dentists assess the severity and location of decay to provide appropriate interventions, ensuring that cavities do not progress into larger issues. Timely fillings prevent the spread of decay, which, if unchecked, can lead to more complex procedures such as root canals. Consistent evaluations by dental professionals ensure sound decisions are made regarding children's dental health, promoting long-term oral wellness.

           10. Benefiting From a Healthy Diet and Dental Health

A balanced diet plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Essential nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins contribute to the development and maintenance of strong enamel. Encouraging children to consume dairy products, leafy greens, and lean proteins can significantly enhance their oral health. Conversely, diets high in processed foods and sugars contribute to elevated acidity in the mouth, eroding enamel and leading to cavities. Educating children and caregivers about the relationship between diet and dental health fosters awareness and promotes healthier eating habits, benefiting overall dental well-being.

           11. Mitigating Orthodontic Issues Early

Early identification of orthodontic issues allows for timely interventions that can correct misalignment before it becomes severe. Dentists can assess bite alignment, jaw growth, and teeth spacing during routine checkups to detect early signs of orthodontic concerns. Recognizing these signs at a young age can help in crafting a proactive treatment plan, avoiding more extensive procedures in the future. Addressing these issues early through professional guidance aids in achieving optimal alignment of teeth and jaw. Moreover, early orthodontic intervention can alleviate functional problems, enhancing overall oral health and comfort.

           12. Consulting a Pediatric Orthodontist

Pediatric dental services consultations provide a comprehensive evaluation of a child's developing dental structures. These consultations are crucial in detecting irregularities that could lead to bite issues, jaw misalignment, or crowding. Early assessments allow orthodontists to recommend preventive measures, such as interceptive orthodontics, to minimize future dental complications. Collaborating with orthodontists at a young age ensures timely intervention, guiding the healthy development of teeth and jaws. Ultimately, proactive orthodontic consultations lay the foundation for aligned teeth and a balanced smile in adulthood.

Children’s dental services are not just about maintaining a bright smile—they are a vital part of supporting overall health, confidence, and development. From teaching proper brushing techniques and preventing cavities to monitoring orthodontic needs and encouraging healthy dietary habits, regular dental care sets children up for long-term success. Early and consistent visits help identify issues before they become serious, reduce the risk of pain and costly treatments, and foster a positive relationship with dental care. By prioritizing professional dental services from an early age, parents and caregivers can ensure children build strong oral health habits that last well into adulthood, promoting healthier, happier lives.
How Modern Dentists Skip Temporary Crowns

Modern dentistry continues to evolve and adapt with technology. Here's how a dentist may avoid using temporary crowns with this tech.

The field of dentistry is constantly evolving, with new technologies improving both efficiency and patient comfort. One of the most significant advancements is the ability for dentists to skip temporary crowns, allowing patients to receive permanent restorations in a single visit. This modern approach not only streamlines the treatment process but also eliminates common inconveniences associated with traditional crown procedures.

How Same-Day Crowns Are Changing Dentistry

In the past, receiving a dental crown required multiple visits, primarily because a temporary crown had to be placed while the permanent one was fabricated in an off-site lab. However, advancements such as same-day crown technology have revolutionized this process. Using digital 3D imaging and Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics technology, dentists can now design, create, and place permanent crowns in a single appointment. This innovation eliminates the waiting period, making dental procedures more convenient for both patients and practitioners.

Reducing Dental Anxiety with Same-Day Crowns

Many people experience anxiety about dental procedures, which often leads to postponed or canceled appointments. According to a 2015 report from The Washington Post, between 40% and 75% of people feel some level of fear when visiting the dentist. The ability to receive a permanent crown in just one visit helps alleviate this anxiety by reducing the number of appointments required. Without the need for temporary crowns, patients can enjoy a faster, more efficient treatment that minimizes discomfort and stress.

Practical Benefits of Skipping Temporary Crowns

Aside from reducing anxiety, eliminating temporary crowns offers several practical benefits. Traditional temporary crowns can sometimes become loose, cause discomfort, or fail to fit perfectly, leading to an unsatisfactory interim experience. With same-day crowns, patients receive a restoration that fits precisely, enhances durability, and immediately improves both function and appearance. The result is a more seamless and comfortable dental experience, with fewer risks of complications.

           1. Same-Day Restoration for Immediate Results

One of the standout benefits of CEREC crowns is the ability to complete the entire procedure in just one visit. Traditional crowns typically require multiple appointments, including a fitting and a wait time for the lab to create the permanent crown. In contrast, CEREC crowns are designed, fabricated, and placed within a single visit using advanced CAD/CAM technology. This means you can walk into the dentist’s office with a damaged tooth and leave with a fully restored smile on the same day.

CEREC crowns are known for their precise fit, thanks to the cutting-edge technology used in their creation. A digital scanner captures a highly accurate 3D image of your tooth, eliminating the need for uncomfortable traditional molds. This ensures that your crown is designed to fit your tooth perfectly, reducing the chances of complications like improper bite alignment or discomfort.

           3. Durability and Aesthetic Appeal

In addition to being convenient and comfortable, CEREC crowns are highly durable. They are made from strong ceramic materials that can withstand the pressures of everyday use, such as chewing and biting. This durability makes them a practical solution for restoring both the appearance and function of your teeth. With proper care, CEREC crowns can last for many years, providing a lasting investment in your oral health.

How the Best Cosmetic Dentists Fix Gummy Smiles

Your smile is one of the first things that people will see when they meet you. Take a look at how the best cosmetic dentist can help you with your gummy smile.

Your smile is one of the first things that people will see when they meet you. According to Statistic Brain, 32% of people are worried about how their teeth look. The issues can range from crooked teeth and stained teeth to having a gummy smile. Fortunately, the best cosmetic dentist can fix all of those problems. Let's take a look at how they can help you with your gummy smile.

           They Can Do Crown Lengthening

This doesn't have anything to do with using dental crowns that are longer than normal ones. Instead, the dentist will apply local anesthetic and make incisions in the gum tissue to eliminate excess parts of it. This will make the teeth appear larger. You can expect a two-week recovery period. Dentists like this one since it has a high success rate.

           They Can Offer Clear Aligners

These aligners aren't just for straightening people's teeth. They can help move the teeth into a better position to address a gummy smile. The

will be able to figure out the best sequence of aligners. According to our expertise, the patients will wear them for roughly 10 days to two weeks before putting in a new one. This will ensure the most favorable results.

These options are available for people who are unhappy that they have so much gum tissue obscuring their teeth. It's something that can make them very hesitant to smile since they might be afraid that it would subject them to ridicule. Dental technology has improved a lot over the decades to be able to improve the appearance of people's mouths.

You can have a gummy smile for a number of reasons, including genetics, having an overgrown upper jaw, poor tooth eruption, or even neurological disorders. Fortunately, you can wind up having a great smile by having any of the above done. That will make you proud to show off your teeth.

4 Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry

Are you looking for the best cosmetic dentist for veneers? Take a look at this blog to see a few benefits of cosmetic dentistry.

Many people disregard cosmetic dentistry as frivolous because it seems to not serve any type of medical or oral health purpose. However, the truth is that cosmetic dentistry can have a positive impact on oral health as well as mental health, which is also an important consideration. Let’s look at some of the top benefits of these types of procedures.

           1. Improve Your Smile

Our smile plays an important part in how we communicate. We want to feel confident in our smile so that we can feel good about sharing it with others. There are many cosmetic procedures that can improve your overall dental appearance, so you can love your smile.

           2. Take Care of Your Teeth and Gums

Many of the problems that affect the appearance of your teeth also affect the function and health of your teeth as well. Straightening teeth, for instance, is a common type of cosmetic procedure, but once teeth are straightened they can function more efficiently too. Fixing misaligned teeth that have deep crevices or cracks will benefit your oral health because bacteria hide in deep crevices and cracks. Improving your teeth in this way can cut down on gum disease and tooth decay. The best cosmetic dentist for veneers can help you with these types of procedures.

           3. Boost Your Confidence

Don’t underestimate how far-reaching a boost in confidence can take you. People who experience deep insecurity over their teeth and smile may be hesitant to take on certain challenges in life. They may not feel confident enough to go in for a job interview for their dream job. They may be insecure about dating because they don’t like the look of their smile. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 96% of adults believe an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex. Your confidence can affect many areas of your life, and improving your teeth is a great way to boost it.

           4. Improve Jaw Function

Depending on the type of work you are having done, you might find that the best cosmetic dentist for veneers can also help you with things like aligning a misaligned bite. A misaligned bite can have a negative effect on your jaw function, which can be fixed with the help of a cosmetic dentist.

One of the best teeth whitening benefits is improving our smiles. Because we greet the world with our smiles, having yellowed or discolored teeth can make us feel self-conscious. When we have a bright, white smile, we're able to greet the world without worrying about what people are going to think about our teeth. A beautiful smile helps us connect with other people in a friendly and outgoing manner. If you're tired of trying to smile while hiding your teeth, it's time to look into professional teeth whitening services.

Another way that a whiter smile can give your self-confidence a boost is that you're aware of your healthy habits. Proper oral hygiene and dental care are important components of our overall wellness. When you know that your inside is as healthy as your outward appearance, you'll feel even better about yourself. When you whiten your teeth, you don't just get a more beautiful smile. Visiting the dentist for regular cleanings will help you maintain your whiter and brighter smile well into the future.

Over-the-counter teeth whitening methods can make a dull smile a bit brighter. Unfortunately, these products don't usually provide the results we all want. If you're interested in whiter teeth, it makes sense to talk to your dentist about your options. This way, you not only obtain the attractive smile you've always dreamed of but you're also ensuring that your teeth and gums are in great shape. Dentists have access to more effective treatments, and they can also provide guidance on how to best make your whitening results last.

The bacteria in your mouth digest these sugars and release acids, which can eat into the enamel on your teeth. When your enamel is attacked by these bacteria, holes known as cavities can form in your teeth.

If you notice tiny pits or holes in your teeth, it's likely because you're developing cavities. Another accompanying symptom you may experience is bad breath. Since cavities are infected areas, they can be breeding grounds for bacteria. Having too much bad bacteria in your mouth tends to cause bad breath. Visit the dentist as soon as possible for teeth cleaning and other treatments if any of these issues are affecting your self-confidence. A knowledgeable dentist can restore your smile and boost your self-esteem.

A person's smile is a key factor in their looks. Some people don't like their smile and a solution to this is brightening their smile with teeth whitening treatments. According to statisticbrain.com, 32% of people have concerns about the appearance of their teeth. If you feel the same way, you can find out if teeth whitening will be beneficial for you. Teeth whitening can be done at home with products you can buy from the store or it can be done by your local dentist. Cosmetic dentistry is increasing in popularity. You can find cosmetic dentists that will offer this procedure and others like it.

Cosmetic dentists concentrate on the aesthetics of your smile. It is highly suggested to go to a dentist to get your teeth whitened because they are professionals and have experience doing such treatments. They can also make sure you are getting the best teeth whitening for sensitive teeth if you suffer from that.

How Teeth Whitening Treatments Are Performed

Teeth whitening is also known as cosmetic tooth bleaching. This type of treatment helps get rid of stains and discoloration in teeth. When you visit your dentist to get the best teeth whitening treatment done, you will see better results faster than if you did this treatment yourself at home. In the office, the cosmetic dentist can make your teeth up to 8 shades whiter in around 1 hour. This is faster than any procedure that is done from the comfort of your home.

Many cosmetic dentists offer in-office teeth whitening to just start the whitening process. In this case, they will give you at-home teeth whitening products to continue to whiten your teeth as weeks go on. They'll provide you with instructions on how to get the best results.

Talk with your local dentist to see if they can give you the best teeth whitening treatment for your smile. Before booking the appointment, make sure you consider everything involved, including the price. Most insurances do not cover cosmetic dental procedures. Make it a point to ask what the price will be before saying yes.

Teeth that have been whitened will continue to age and, over time, lose their luster. One way to help maintain white teeth is through the avoidance of tobacco products and beverages that are known to stain teeth. Additionally, whitened teeth will need occasional touch-ups that can be done professionally or with home kits.

We understand that we are in the midst of a concerning, confusing time. Our office wants to ensure that our patients and staff stay healthy.

Starting tomorrow we will be cancelling all appointments through the end of March. Those of you with appointments in the next two weeks our team will be reaching out to reschedule to a later date.

We will be available daily at the office for EMERGENCIES ONLY from 9:00 AM- 2:00 PM.

We have the following procedures in place:

We continue to disinfect our treatment rooms in between each patient. This includes disinfecting the exam chair, work surfaces, light handles, and instruments.

We continue to use rubber dams for most patient procedures, vacuums and suction, use of eye wear and masks for the staff; all of which reduce potential spread and infection of any illness within our office.

We are increasing the frequency in which we are disinfecting the patient lounge, pens, clipboards, and beverage station.

We are screening patients to determine risk for ANY seasonal infections, but also for COVID-19. We thank you in advance for understanding if we ask you to reschedule your appointment.

We are temporarily a “no handshake” environment for the safety of our patients. Dr. Maricarmen says feel free to “elbow bump” her!

We have moved our air purifier to the waiting room as a preventative measure.

We ask that our team members and patients follow these procedures:

Please wash your hands prior to entry of our office and use hand sanitizer upon your arrival.

If you are sick, exhibiting any symptoms of a virus, have been exposed to a COVID-19 patient, or have traveled outside of the country, please call us to reschedule your appointment.

Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and dispose of it immediately.

Avoid touching your face and mouth.

We appreciate your cooperation at this time and thank you for your understanding.

Our staff will keep you updated to any changes.

Keep A Healthy Smile All Summer

Summer time is officially here! This means having fun in the sun with your friends and families at parties, barbecues, at the beach, and more! While it’s certainly a time to celebrate and have a great time since school and other obligations are put on hold, there’s one thing that we want to protect and that’s your smile. Your Syracuse dentist will discuss how to keep up with your dental and oral hygiene and care this summer.

Find a Healthy Diet and Stick With It!

We understand that it can be easy to fall into a bad diet during the summer. With all of the barbecues and backyard parties full of snacks, sweets and treats, it’ll certainly be difficult to ignore it. While it’s fun to splurge, make sure that you’re still eating right for a majority of your meals. This means limiting the amount of snacking that you’re doing—if you can’t help but snack, try to replace the chips and candies with celery, carrots, or other healthy vegetables!

It also highly recommended not to eat very late at night, especially if you plan on going to bed relatively soon. You’re allowing the bacteria and food particles to linger in your mouth overnight instead of giving your body time to properly digest. If you eat and then go to bed, you’re also skipping your nightly brushing routine, making it easier for your teeth to suffer from cavities and potential decay. Eat at appropriate times and don’t forget to brush and floss your teeth before you go to bed to protect your smile!

          Drink Water—Lots of It

It’s no secret that summertime can bring some of the hottest recorded temperatures around, which is why it’s important to stay hydrated. This won’t only help your dental health, but it’ll help your overall health, too! In between meals, try to consume as much water as possible, since there are many popular drinks that can cause you to dehydrate or dry out your mouth (coffee, sodas, sports drinks, alcohol).

Protect Your Teeth as You Play Sports

Summer is a great time to participate in a number of sports activities, like baseball, soccer, football, and more! But accidents can happen and your teeth can easily suffer from a hit. Most dental injuries in children are sports related, so we recommend using mouth guards for these times. There is no intention of anyone getting hurt, but that doesn’t mean it can’t potentially happen! Your teeth will thank you in the morning.

If you want to learn some more helpful summer tips about protecting your smile, or if you’d like to make an appointment for your bi-annual check-up, don’t hesitate to call ProSmile Dentistry at (315)475-4559 today! We wish you a happy, safe and healthy summer!

Will my insurance cover this?

Why dental insurance should never dictate your treatment

"I don’t want to schedule that crown today if my insurance is not going to cover 100%."

Unfortunately, this is the feedback that we receive from patients all of the time. Sometimes we hear this when it comes to x-rays, exams, or treatment that the doctor is recommending. It helps me realize that we have not done a good enough job educating our patients about their dental needs and the potential outcome if they do not have treatment done. It is difficult trying to explain to people that their dental insurance companies cannot see what we see in order to determine what is needed to properly treat and diagnose a person including something as simple as x-rays. I often wonder how many things like that get missed because of the misconception that if insurance doesn’t cover it, we shouldn’t be doing it. When the truth is, insurance companies are making business decisions, while we are making health decisions.

It wasn’t too long ago that having dental insurance was viewed as a great benefit…a “must have”. Over the years, there have been small changes that have had an impact on both the patient and the providers of care. Not all change is good or bad, it is just different and it is our job, as patients and providers, to work together to maximize your dental benefits while putting patient care first.

While treatment is our number one priority, I have compiled a list of information, to help you navigate your insurance, based on some commonly asked questions:

Q: What is the difference between and “in network provider" and "out of network provider”?

A: An “in network” provider has signed an agreement with an insurance carrier, accepting fees set forth by contract. An “out of network” provider has NOT signed an agreement with the carrier. This means the patient is responsible for the difference between what the dentist charges and what the insurance company pays. It is important for you to understand that some plans will let you go out of network and some won’t. However, you will benefit most if you visit an in network provider! We strongly encourage you to check with your insurance company prior to your visit to inquire of any restrictions.

Q: What are the top reasons we see insurance claims denied?

A: Filing limit timed out: It is very important for you to provide your dental office with new insurance information as soon as you have it so that we can update your file and avoid delays or worse non-payment of claims. Insurance companies often set filing limits on claims. These can vary anywhere from 3 months to 24 months. Once the clock runs out on the claim, the insurance company will deny it, causing the patient to pay 100% of the service.

A: Annual maximum dollars used: You should know your calendar year maximum. A calendar year is a benefit dollar amount set forth by your insurance carrier, usually per person. Once the dollar amount is met, you are responsible for any other out of pocket costs for the year, including preventive care visits.

A: Not a covered service or plan benefit: You should have an understanding of your dental insurance benefits. Most dental insurance companies have websites where you can access your individual plan benefits. Most insurance websites offer helpful information such as: benefit periods, covered procedures, deductible information, calendar year maximums and frequencies.

We cannot stress enough the importance of creating and maintaining a dialogue with your insurance carrier and that you should be your own best advocate. Check and make yourself aware of any waiting periods or restrictions on your plan. We do our very best to help you maximize your insurance benefits, ultimately however the relationship lies with you and your carrier but please put your treatment above all else. We are always here to help!

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month! This month is meant to raise awareness about the importance of children’s oral health. It is imperative to instill good brushing and flossing habits from an early age. However, despite the fact that it is almost completely preventable, tooth decay is one of the most chronic diseases affecting children. And, what’s more, reports show that American students miss 51 million hours of school every year because of oral health issues. But, this month, and every month forward we can all start making a difference. Here are some tips to get kids excited about taking care of their teeth.

          A Star Chart

While this may seem old-fashioned, nothing shows accomplishment more than actually physically seeing it displayed. Making a star chart is a fun family craft to get everyone involved. Plus, it lets your youngster know that you all value good oral health. Make it exciting by creating accomplishment goals. Consider offering a prize once your child meets the objectives.

          Play a song

Why not add a bit of toe-tapping fun to what may seem like a boring task? Have your child brush for the entire length of a song. You both can choose a favorite tune. Make sure it is around 2-3 minutes long.

Regular dental visits should be a part of growing up, just as any other routine. As stated before, oral health is directly related to overall health. From the time your child’s first teeth erupt you need to keep them clean. Tooth decay is preventable. Your child may visit the dentist as early as one year old. That way, she or he gets comfortable with the process from an early age.

How Apples are Good for Your Teeth

An apple a day.....Keeps the dentist away?

People have been asserting that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” since the 19th century. While it may not necessarily be true that those who eat apples never have to see a doctor, apples certainly have great health benefits for our bodies! Did you know they can even be good for our teeth? Let’s take a look at what the research says … It’s widely thought that chewing a crisp, fresh apple can help brush away plaque on our teeth. We’re not too sure on this one, as some studies show a higher plaque content on teeth after eating an apple. At the same time, there is evidence to suggest some polyphenols in apples can lower the ability of cavity-causing bacteria to adhere to teeth. Further, some studies have shown that the antioxidants in apples can help prevent periodontal disease. Apples even contain a (very) small amount of fluoride. This is worth noting, as fluoride is so important in helping prevent cavities. Lastly, the act of chewing an apple stimulates saliva production. Saliva helps wash away food debris and bacteria. Remember, though, apples contain sugar and acid so it’s best not to go overboard with them. You can even swish with water after eating one to wash away some of the sugar left behind. As the science continues to look into how apples affect our teeth, one thing we know is true: regular dental visits, along with daily tooth brushing and flossing, is your best defense against tooth decay!

If you’re like some of us here at ProSmile Dentistry with young children, your August focus is switching from planning barbecues and beach trips to shopping for new clothes, sports equipment and supplies for your son or daughter’s new school year. In the annual rush to tie up summer activities and get the kids back into a school routine, it’s easy to forget about dental health. Please don’t! How about making smile maintenance appointments part of your “Back-to-School” checklist? Most cavities don’t hurt until they become infected, which could mean missed school and possibly lower academic performance as a result.

The Why, When, How and Where of Tongue Scraping

Imagine it’s still winter … you’re standing at the door, ready to brave the cold. You’re layered-up with three shirts and a sweatshirt, your heavy winter coat, and two layers of socks underneath your waterproof winter boots. Then you’ve got those awesome jeans with the flannel on the inside, your comfy hat, scarf, and gloves. You’re set! But wait. As you step toward the door, you suddenly realize you have an itch … and it’s deep down … buried beneath all those layers. And, try as you may, every attempt to reach that bugger-of-an-itch fails. Defeated, you realize the only relief you’re ever gonna’ get is to remove each one of those layers. Where are we going with this?!

           The Tongue

We’re going inside your mouth, of course, to your tongue – this is a dental article, after all! Because whether you know it or not, like you in the wintertime, your tongue is also “all covered up” – buried beneath layers of bacteria, fungi, and food residue that can inhibit your ability to taste, let alone cause your tongue to appear various shades of yellow, white, or green! Remove the bacteria, though, and your food will once again directly interact with those taste buds, and return to its natural hue. So how does one do that? With a tongue scraper, of course!

           WHAT is a tongue scraper?

A tongue scraper is a U-shaped device designed to “scrape” the top layer of scum from your tongue. They have been in use since ancient times, and have been made of everything from wood to whalebone. Nowadays, they are made of more hygienic material, and come in a variety of shapes, sizes, designs and colors.

           WHY use a tongue scraper?

The residue on your tongue includes things like the cavity-inducing Streptococcus mutans bacterium, fungi, rotting food (that’s not good), and what’s referred to as “volatile sulfur compounds.” In other words, sulfur – that “rotting egg smell.” Talk about ew! So, as you can see, there are several reasons why you’d want to get rid of this gunk in your mouth. Let’s tackle them one by one:

              Reduce bad breath: ‘nuff said!

Reduce your risk of periodontal disease and cavities: Bad bacteria contribute to plaque and tartar on teeth, making them more susceptible to cavities. Bacteria build-up can also lead to inflammation of gum tissue (gingivitis). If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontal disease, which means a more expensive dental visit (plus other unwanted consequences!). Speaking of avoiding an expensive dental visit, when was the last time you came in to see us? Come see us now if it’s been awhile, by calling in at 315-475-4559.

Make room for good bacteria: see our article here on probiotics for your mouth.

Prevent heart disease? While the debate is still up in the air, some studies suggest there could be a correlation between gum disease and heart disease.

HOW does one use a tongue scraper?

In general, make sure to rinse your tongue scraper before and after use. Apply the tongue scraper to the back of your tongue and drag it forward. Then, rinse and repeat. Make sure to get the sides of your tongue as well, not just the center! Make sure not to press too hard or you can cause yourself to bleed. And, if you’re wondering if you should scrape your tongue while recovering from a dental procedure, that’s a good question … ask your dentist for the best advice particular to your situation. Still not sure how this thing really works? The next time you’re in ask Dr. Maricarmen, Sheila, or Tina for a quick tutorial!

WHERE do I buy one? Tongue scrapers are relatively inexpensive, and can be found at any local drugstore. It doesn’t matter the material, color, or brand – just find the one you like and get scraping!

Kicking the Tobacco Habit is Good for your Mouth

         More Than Just Stained Teeth

From its seemingly mild side effects (bad breath, tooth discoloration, buildup of plaque and tartar), to the more sinister (increased risk of oral cancer, loss of bone within the jaw, gum disease and any number of resulting complications) – tobacco is indeed an oral health risk.

Tobacco can cause serious health issues by breaking down the attachment of bone and soft tissue to your teeth. Because of this breakdown, the use of tobacco makes smokers much more susceptible to infection and diseases. In fact, 90% of people who have cancer of the mouth, throat, or gums admit to using tobacco in some form.

Cigarettes, cigars and pipes aren’t the only culprits; smokeless tobacco can be just as detrimental to oral health, if not worse. In fact, there are twenty-eight chemicals found in chewing tobacco alone that are proven to increase the risk of cancer in the mouth, throat, and esophagus. Chewing tobacco and snuff contain higher levels of nicotine than those found in cigarettes and other Tobacco products, making it exposes the roots, and ultimately makes teeth more susceptible to decay.

          Help is Just Next Door

The only way to help eliminate these risks is to never start using tobacco products, or to quit if you do. In fact, simply reducing tobacco use is proven to help lower your risks. If you feel that it is time to reduce your risk of cancer, gum disease, infection and other oral complications, your dentist or doctor can help you create a plan to help you quit using tobacco, along with prescribing certain medicines or programs to help you kick the habit. Here at ProSmile Dentistry, programs we’ve shared with patients have helped make a difference in their lives, while helping protect their health at the same time.

Remember, it is never too late to quit. If you’re interested in getting help to quit, let us know the next time you’re in for an appointment.

10 Dental Care Tips During the Winter to Avoid Teeth Pain

During the winter months, tooth pain can become unbearable. Freezing temperatures and cold air can affect the teeth causing them to become increasingly sensitive. The following tips will help you protect your teeth and reduce the risk of uncomfortable tooth pain during the winters.

Don’t Over Brush – Brushing teeth too often can wear away the enamel and actually damage the surface of the tooth.

Hat Tip: Brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2-3 minutes (recommended by American Dental Hygienists’ Association).

Try Different Toothpaste – Use the toothpaste that contains fluoride or try one that is specifically formulated for sensitive teeth.

Hat Tip: Look for the ADA Seal—your assurance that the product has been objectively evaluated for safety and effectiveness by an independent body of scientific experts, the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs.

Get a Complete List of ADA Accepted Toothpaste.

          Interesting Fact:

The toothpaste tube was not invented, but reuse of the previously invented Paint Tube that had revolutionized painting and allowed for the development of the Impressionist Movement in Paris, France.

Reduce the Amount of Acids and Sugar in Your Diet – Acids and sugar can damage the surface of your teeth and break down the delicate enamel that protects them. Your teeth are frequently under attack by acids, but the good news is this damage is constantly being reversed. Acids leech minerals from the enamel through a process called demineralization. Fortunately, the natural process of remineralization replaces those minerals and strengthens the teeth all over again – and your saliva is a key player. Saliva contains minerals such as calcium and phosphates to help repair the teeth. Fluoride is another mineral that helps repair weakened enamel. However, replacing lost minerals can only do so much to prevent the effects of sugar on teeth if you eat lots of sweets and starches throughout the day.

Hat Tip: Limiting your sugar intake is vital if you want to give your mouth a fighting chance to fix the damage.

Use a Fluoride Mouthwash – Use a mouthwash that contains fluoride at least twice a day to rinse away debris, kill odor causing bacteria and help protect the sensitive enamel.

Is Mouthwash Necessary for Healthy Teeth? Research Proves Otherwise

Breathe in Through Your Nose – Breathing through your nose prevents the cold air from hitting your teeth while exhaling through your mouth allows the air from the lungs to keep them warm.

Warm Beverages – Sipping on a warm beverage can keep the teeth from becoming too cold, especially if you are going to be outside for several hours at a time.

Clean Your Toothbrush – Keeping your toothbrush clean and replacing it every few months, reduces your exposure to bacteria that could eventually lead to gingivitis and tooth decay.

Replacing Your Toothbrush Regularly? 5 Reasons Why You Should

Visit Your Dentist Regularly – Regular visits to your dentist for check-ups and routine fluoride treatments will also help to protect your teeth throughout the winter.

Use a Mouth Guard – Wearing a mouth guard when you are going to be outside for long periods of time will prevent you from forcing your teeth together while you work and keep them from clicking together if your teeth begin to chatter from the cold.

Wear a Scarf – Wearing a scarf will keep your lower jaw and neck warm and can also be moved to cover your mouth if necessary.

Start Your Year Off Right with Your Syracuse Dentist!

With September now well under way, most children will have headed back to school to begin a new year of learning and growing. At ProSmile Dentistry, we feel that this is one of the best times of the year to bring your child in for one of their twice-yearly cleanings and exams. Going back to school with a bright smile and with any potential problems identified can be crucial, plus we know how busy you can be once things really kick into gear.

With that said, we would like to add some tips for how you can make your next visit the best for your child.

-Be mindful of scheduling time. Don’t schedule when your younger child may typically be napping during the day. If you have an older child, try not to make it at the end of a busy school day or where tons of activities are performed beforehand. Also take a look at when you are booking per month and do so ahead of time, as just before school and during spring break will typically be busiest.

-If you have an older child, make sure they go before the younger child if at all possible. This will allow for the younger ones to watch and should help relieve any anxiety about their visit.

-Make sure your child has some very light snack before they come. They may not be able to eat for a few hours after a cleaning, so having something nutritious and light ahead of time is key. Make sure not to overeat to avoid instances of gagging and to brush teeth after this meal.

-Lastly, make sure you, the parent, are not feeling anxious. Kids can often sense this on parents and then take it on themselves. Encourage your child to ask questions and make sure to stay calm and by their side- and with the help of the ProSmile team, we will all make it through it.

Dieting for a Better Smile

         ProSmile Dentistry's Dietary Suggestions

You’re an exceptional patient and care greatly about your oral health. You brush twice daily, floss once daily and visit Dr. Justiniano, the best Syracuse NY dentist, at least every six months for a cleaning and exam. However, no matter how on top of these things you are, it is not all that can be considered when looking at your oral health.

Patients will often overlook the importance of their diet as it relates to the health of their mouth, and not just the size of their waists. To help you make some healthier picks for both of these issues, below we have suggested some of our top picks for a healthier dental diet.

Water: everyone’s favorite drink to stay hydrated is also a top pick for excellent oral health. Water helps stimulate saliva, which can help protect the teeth, and also assists with speech and digestion. Water also has the ability to get in between the teeth seamlessly, so can also wash away any lingering or stuck food particles left over there too.

Whole Grain: white rice or brown? Whole grain bread or white? By choosing the whole grain option in these and so many other examples, you can be adding a boost of vitamins and nutrients to your diet that helps out your smile. Not to mention, by choosing these over the starchy white counterparts, you are also cutting down on the amount of sugar you take in, which can lessen instances of decay.

Veggies: dark, leafy veggies, in particular, are best here. Think bok choy or broccoli, both with an ability to add some calcium to your diet, which helps strengthen and protect your smile. They also can pair nicely with the last example too…

Dairy: anyone for broccoli and cheese? Yes, cheese, yogurt, low-fat milk and more can also add calcium to your diet, besides being tasty. Calcium helps strengthen the gums, teeth, and bones that hold them in place too.

For more information on choosing dietary items that benefit your oral health, schedule a visit with your Syracuse NY dentist Dr. Justiniano today by calling (315) 475-4559.
